Your second home is first

I love the slogan above. Your second home is first. It’s from First Hotels ( and for me, it’s as simple as that. Think about what makes a great stay? Is it a fancy room, the facilities or the staff? How can you turn around a 3* hotel into a 5* hotel? It’s all about the personalized service. If you greet every guest like a returning guest they will forget about the parts which aren’t up to standard.

The first hotel where I worked was First Hotel Cardinal in Växjö, Sweden. A lovely, small 4* city hotel with a personal touch. We had an old-fashioned elevator that you find in many older city hotels in Sweden and we used to leave the reception desk and open the elevator door for every single guest. We got the opportunity to meet the guest on a personal level and it makes such a difference!

This and last week, I’ve neglected blogging about hotels and the hotel industry. Writing about my passion for hotels was my initial idea for the blog.
So, I wanted to give you a few insider hotel tips for the summer!

Note down the hotels policy for check-in time before arrival and if you arrive before that, call the hotel and request early check-in. By doing this, there is a bigger chance you can check in early. Too many people are unaware about the check-in time and get upset upon arrival.

If you celebrate any special occasion such as anniversary, birthday, engagement, etc. always announce this in advance. Hotels LOVE to spoil love couples and there are numerous of freebees attached such as sparkling wine, fruit, spa treatments, upgrades (the best) and room decoration. All for free of course!

Upon reservation, request for a sea view room (if applicable of course) and call or email the hotel a few days in advance to remind them. Don’t make a big deal about at check-in, be prepared instead.

Do you plan to wine and dine at a popular venue in the city, ask concierge before arrival to make all necessary arrangements for you. They have the contacts and can create magic!

If you plan to leave the destination/hotel late in the evening, ask for a late check-out! Most often, it’s possible to arrange without charge.

Become a member of their loyal customer program before you arrive. If the hotel is overbooked you will be prioritized for an upgrade as you are a member.

I also wanted to recommend a lovely small hotel in south of Sweden. It’s our secret hideaway and they know how to treat you in order to feel at home! It’s called Blåsingsborg and is located on Österlen. Stay a night or two during summer,

Happy stay!
